Ashen Wings

A Storiiverse Flash Fiction by Ondrea Keigh

The dark sky dances with flames of destruction, mimicking my very soul. Ash falls around me like poisoned snow, blanketing my head, shoulders, and wings. Heavy breaths heave within my chest. My wings fall limp in exhaustion. My knees prickle with the pain of the sharp stones beneath me. I shudder at the voice that echoes all around.

“You are mine,” it says. “Tell me where it is,” the voice commands.

“I c—cannot.” I rasp through my parched throat. I wince as scales pulse over my body, coming and going as I fight to reach the form he cannot overcome.

“No? Why? It is but a simple thing,” soothes the voice. “Just words. Words you know…and wish to tell me.”

Pain sears through my head, spreading to my spine and igniting my wings like lightning. “N-no,” I breathe. But I can feel it. The darkness within spills through my thoughts like ink on a page. I gasp. I try to stop it, to change from my weak human form, to fly away to my king. My king. But it’s too late. I had not been ready, as the Prince had warned me to be. This darkness rose like a thief in the night, and now…

“You are mine,” says the voice just over my shoulder. “Tell me where it is.”

…I am powerless to stop it.
